The pilot program for the Australia-China Legal Profession Development Program commenced in February/March 2007, and concluded in late June/early July. The program involved 10 Chinese lawyers and officials, including a Director from the Division of International Judicial Cooperation, Supreme People's Procuratorate and a Supreme Court Judge. Four of the participants were funded under AusAID's China Australia Governance Program, and the remaining six obtained Australian Leadership Awards - Fellowships.
The placements were selected to suit the particular interests expressed by the participants. Five of the participating lawyers, drawn from the private sector, undertook placements with Australian law firms: Clayton Utz, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane, Allens Arthur Robinson, Sydney and Melbourne, Minter Ellison, Melbourne, Deacons, Sydney. Other placements included the New South Wales Legal Services Commissioner, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Commonwealth, Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales; the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, the Judicial Commission of New South Wales, the Federal Court, the Supreme Court of New South Wales, the Law School, Southern Cross University, Western Australian Legal Aid Commission, Citizens Advice Bureau and Community legal centre. Activities included attendance at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission summer school, and specialised training sessions at the Attorney-General’s Department, the Australian Parliament, the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales and AustLII.

As a component of the program, participants developed short presentations on topics relevant to their studies and experience in Australia. Additionally, three of the participants prepared reports on their experience of the program for the Urumqi follow-up seminar.
