International Legal Education and Training
ILSAC’s work to increase international opportunities for Australia’s legal education and training sector and to enhance the profile of Australia’s legal education and training institutions is undertaken through the International Legal Education and Training Committee. ILSAC focuses on a wide range of issues to pursue this objective, including promoting Australian education institutions overseas, undertaking research on and analysis of the Australian legal education sector, and pursuing international recognition of Australian legal qualifications. ILSAC works closely with the Council of Australian Law Deans and other relevant bodies in progressing this work.
This work corresponds with Objective 3 in ILSAC’s Business Plan.
Current Priorities include:
- undertaking several projects following on from ILSAC’s initiative to promote the internationalisation of the Australian law degree
- analysis of statistics relating to overseas students studying law in Australia to assist in policy development and strategic planning with a view to further promoting Australian legal education and training capabilities internationally
- promoting the establishment of a consistent, uniform and transparent system across Australia for the assessment of qualifications of foreign qualified graduates and practitioners seeking admission to practise law in Australia, and
- assisting the Council of Australian Law Deans with the publication of Studying Law in Australia (SLIA) 2008. SLIA 2008 is currently available online in English, Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish and Korean.
