Territories East
The Territories East Branch fulfils the Australian Government’s role in achieving good governance and community wellbeing in the Australian Capital Territory, Jervis Bay, Norfolk Island and Northern Territories.
Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
The Australian Government has responsibility for the governance regime of the ACT. The extent of the Australian Government's presence in the Australian Capital Territory, and its interest in the role of Canberra as the national capital, means that there is regular interaction between the governments.
Jervis Bay Territory
Services are currently provided by the Australian Government, primarily through funding ACT Government agencies. The territory is subject to Commonwealth applied ACT laws. There is no local government and residents are represented politically only at federal level through the ACT.
Norfolk Island and Northern Territory
The Norfolk Island and Northern Territory Section provides policy advice to the Australian Government on:
- Policies and legislation of the Norfolk Island Government.
- Requests for Australian Government assistance and action from the Norfolk Island Government and the Northern Territory Government.
- Australian Government interests on Norfolk Island, including the management of the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area, a place on the national heritage list.
- Governance arrangements for Norfolk Island and the Northern Territory, including the Office of the Administrator in both territories.
- Proposed Australian Government legislation and programmes that may extend to Norfolk Island.
