The Future Acts and System Coordination Branch comprises the Future Acts Team and the System Coordination Team.

Our areas of responsibility

Future acts team

The role of the Future Acts team is to:

  • provide legal policy advice to Australian Government departments and agencies on the future act regime in the Native Title Act
  • in particular, assist in and monitor the development of Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) involving the Australian Government
  • develop legal policy in relation to future acts and ILUAs
  • educate departments and agencies about native title, including through the delivery of seminars.

System coordination team

The role of the System Coordination team is to:

  • facilitate stakeholder participation in the management of the native title system, particularly through the Native Title Coordination Committee and Native Title Consultative Forum
  • advise on native title policy development and implementation
  • monitor and periodically review funding and related operational aspects of the native title system
  • manage the implementation of section 200 of the Native Title Act 1993 regarding financial assistance arrangements with States and Territories, and 
  • engage with and contribute to whole-of-government work on Indigenous Affairs.
