Overview
The Protective Security Coordination Centre (PSCC), a Division of the Attorney-General’s Department, is hosting the 20th Security in Government (SIG) Conference at Canberra’s National Convention Centre from 5 to 7 December 2007.
This year’s theme is the Future of Security. The national security environment has changed dramatically since the inaugural SIG in 1987. For the 20th anniversary of SIG it is timely to look ahead and examine the Future of Security.
With emerging threats of pandemics and bioterrorism, WMD proliferation and cyber-crime, and with environmental issues and natural disasters, all governments and the private sector must continue to develop effective and coordinated protective security arrangements.
This year’s conference will examine these issues and highlight the need to harness science, engineering and technology capabilities to better deal with this evolving security landscape and safeguard Australians and Australian interests.
In its 20th year, SIG continues to be the largest conference of its type in Australia. SIG 2007 will include an array of international and national speakers, a number of panel discussions and a trade exhibition that will deliver the latest developments in policy and technology in the protective security environment.
The role of the PSCC
The PSCC has wide-ranging protective security responsibilities for:
- the development, maintenance and coordination of Australia’s national counter-terrorism capabilities
- the coordination of Australia’s national crisis management arrangements in response to a threat or act of terrorism
- the management of the National Security Hotline
- the development and promotion of protective security policy, advice and common standards and practices
- the coordination of protection arrangements for at-risk persons, premises and facilities, including Australian Government Ministers, visiting foreign dignitaries and the foreign diplomatic and consular community in Australia
- the provision of protective, physical, information technology and personnel security training to Australian Government officers, and
- the provision of personnel security vetting services to Government agencies and private contractors engaged by the Australian Government.

SES Breakfast

As part of SIG, the Attorney-General’s Department holds a breakfast every year for Senior Executive Officers (SES) of Australian Government departments and agencies.
The guest speaker at the SIG 2007 SES Breakfast is the British High Commissioner, Her Excellency the Rt Hon Mrs Helen Liddell. She will present the topic ‘Learning Lessons the Hard Way’, which explores the history of terrorism and counter-terrorist legislation in the UK, and include the lessons learned from the 7 July 2005 terrorist attacks in London.
