International legal cooperation

What is International Legal Cooperation?

International Legal Cooperation is about promoting awareness and understanding of Australia’s legal system and institutions in the Asia – Pacific and other regions. It aims to facilitate a greater understanding of each country’s laws, legal systems and legal institutions, particularly in areas of trade, business and international law, and to contribute to the development of legal institutions, legal education and training and professional legal contact and interchange.

Legal Cooperation with Indonesia

Australia – Indonesia Ministerial Forum Met in Bali on 29 June 2006

The Eighth Australia – Indonesia Ministerial Forum was held in Bali on 29 June 2006. 

The meeting enables the government to government working groups established to promote mutual interests to report on their diverse activities. 

The Forum also provides an opportunity for business people to meet and speak with Ministers.  The International Legal Services Advisory Council (ILSAC) has a specific interest in International Legal Cooperation and in promoting these links between Australia and Indonesia. Members encouraged and supported the formation of the Working Group on Legal Cooperation (WGLC) and the Secretariat provides the Australian secretariat services for the WGLC. The WGLC has private and public sector membership and is jointly chaired by the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department and the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights. 

The Working Group on Legal Cooperation was established at the Forum in 1999 in recognition of the significant increase in the number of legal cooperation activities which were occurring between the two countries. 

The Working Group on Legal Cooperation met in Bali on 26 and 27 June 2006. Officials only attended on the first day, with private sector members joining on the second day.  Meeting reports are as follows:

A Memorandum of Understanding on Legal Cooperation was signed by the Attorney-General and the Indonesian Minister for Justice and Human Rights on 25 October 2000.  Both Ministers jointly opened the inaugural meeting of the Working Group on Legal Cooperation which was held in Jakarta on 10 and 11 April 2002.
